Beautiful Buns :)

Our hot dog dinner

I'm on a 'bread roll' here folks-been baking bread and rolls all week! As we drove home from school one day last week, I told Iman that I was too poofed to cook anything heavy for dinner and playfully asked if she minded having hot-dogs.... She exclaimed with delight that it was one of her favourites (like I didn't know right??) and asked if I could prepare all the stuff (pickles, tomato, onions, chips etc) on the side as well. That I did and more. I love making my own hot dog and burger buns; and the sausages we were having that day were a few inches longer than the normal-it would be hard finding commercial buns to fit. LOL. I guess that's why they call them gourmet sausages, heheh.

And need I tell you that nothing could match a homemade bun in taste, so as soon as we got home, into the mixer went all the ingredients for the buns. An hour and a half later, they were baked and ready.

Below is the recipe that I've been using for yonks and with beautiful results too. I got it off the net and it's aptly named 'beautiful burger buns.' A couple of my son Jeremy's friends, Azmir & Raynor would sit at my dining table and just eat bun after bun after bun. And when everyone else looked like they'd had their fill, they would have another go... Now you know why when I have them kids over for dinner, I'd quadruple the recipe!!!

Yummy, pillow-soft buns

Beautiful Burger/Hot Dog Buns
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried onion flakes (onion)
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon quick-rising yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 1/4 cups unbleached flour
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup sugar

Instructions

    1. Combine all the ingredients and mix and knead them together, by hand or by mixer, until you have a soft, smooth dough.
    2. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover and let rise for 1 hour.
    3. Divide the dough into 8 pieces and shape each piece into a flattened ball; place the buns on greased baking sheets, cover and let rise 30-40 minutes, until they're puffy.
    4. Preheat oven to 375°.
    5. Bake the buns for 12-15 minutes, until they're golden brown; remove from oven and baking sheet and cool them on a rack.
    6. Split and use for burgers or sandwiches.
    7. For burgers, butter the split sides and fry them, buttered side down, until they're golden brown and warmed through.
